Outdoor Yoga

Outdoor yoga in Vancouver
Nothing feels more earthy and environmental than sun salutations outdoors. Outdoor Yoga is soothing and invigorating in a way that indoor classes just can't beat!

You need to prepare differently for doing yoga outside. For example, dress in layers so that you are ready for cool breezes. Wear sunscreen in case you are out of the shade. Bring a thick yoga mat for protection against any surface. Avoid eating big meals for 1-2 hours prior to class. If you are worried about energy, consume a light snack 20-30 minutes before coming. And don't forget to use a washroom before class.

Meet with other yogis and yoginis through the Vancouver Outdoor Yoga Meetup Group. Beginners and experienced students will enjoy this Vinyasa flow class. The group meets on Wednesdays and Sundays in the Summer, but exact locations and times are private until you register. If you want deep meditation, try the Active Meditation Meetup Group.

Canada Place and Exhale Studio present a free outdoor yoga class in the summertime! Classes in Summer 2009 were held on the Observation Deck at Canada Place, overlooking Coal Harbor and Stanley Park. They were on Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. Stay tuned to the website for this year's schedule. In the meantime, Exhale Studio's year-round schedule is full of every yoga style as well as Pilates and dance classes.

Eoin Finn
is a popular yoga provider here in Vancouver. His outdoor yoga classes on Kit's Beach in the Summer are a huge hit. Drop in fee is $10 or $35 for four classes. Eoin is an energetic surfer yogi who offers workshops and retreats as well. Eoin's website is full of amazing information about yoga, and he updates his schedule on a regular basis.

While Trine Studio specializes in Hatha, Vinyasa, prenatal and parent/child classes, they are also known for their outdoor classes. Their Summer outdoor yoga session start in July, weather permitting, and they are open to everyone. Suggested donation is $10/class and all proceeds will go to the BC Breast Cancer Foundation this year. Classes are Sundays at 10 a.m. You can also take in a Tuesday class at 6:15 p.m. “It's an amazing way to be in nature and meet amazing people,” said Trine Yoga instructor Cielo English.

For a real treat in spring or summer, check out the adult wellness classes at VanDusen Botanical Garden.  They often offer yoga in the garden; and afterwards participants are free to wander among the flowers!
